Personal Experiences

While performing numerous arthroscopies/ligament reconstructive surgeries as knee specialists, we noticed that we often experienced pain and stiffness in the lower back, particularly during and after arthroscopy programs. This was despite using a footstool support on the floor designed to reduce stress on the intervertebral discs by deloading the lumbar spine.

Since we wanted to find a better way to protect the back and have more control over the patient’s lower leg, we developed the Knee Arthroscopy Belt (KAB). The goal of this device is to improve ergonomics during knee arthroscopy procedures. The (KAB) is a lightweight, low-profile device worn around the waist under the surgical gown.

We have both tested the KAB extensively while performing surgical arthroscopy procedures, with very satisfying results. A big advantage is that we can now operate with a horizontally positioned pelvis instead of a tilted one when applying varus or valgus stress to the knee, eliminating the need for a footstool and providing much greater stability of the leg that we operate on. Additionally, applying varus or valgus stress is easier and requires less effort. The back pain and stiffness we previously experienced have significantly decreased.
